Who Can Enroll in Child Support
In general, you can enroll in child support if you are a parent or legal guardian of a child under 18. That’s almost all it takes to qualify for child support services.
If you are applying for CalWORKS, you will normally be referred to us for services automatically. We will reach out to you directly to start that process.
What Matters When Enrolling in Child Support
You can enroll if:
- You are the child’s mother, father, or legal guardian
- You are or are not the parent who takes primary care of the child
- You or the child’s other parent live in California or anywhere else in the U.S., including Native American tribal lands, as well as many other countries
What Does Not Matter When Enrolling in Child Support
When enrolling in child support, you do not have to worry about:
- Your immigration status or documentation or the other parent’s
- Your income level or employment status or the other parent’s
- Already having a child support order or having the other parent’s name on the birth certificate
Establishing who the child’s other legal parent is and getting a child support order are normal parts of the child support process.
